Birthday Word of the Day: Dragées

by Mitja on July 27, 2010

Citrus turned five years old on Saturday.  She is officially a big girl and is proving it more and more each day with defiant acts of independence.  I hear parents say all the time that they cannot believe how fast time went by with their children, but I have yet to truly feel that.  I feel like I remember every day.

Of course my memories of the last five years are aided by the 2,100+ photos I have of my daughter.  Those were the good ones, of course, and I have assembled them into a slide show with a soundtrack of her favorite children’s songs.  Just click HERE to view.

Just kidding.

The lucky girl had a birthday party at school yesterday.  She has a very large class, with the kids divided into two groups.  One set of students starts the day with two English-speaking teachers while the other group is taught by two Mandarin-speaking teachers.  They swap teachers mid-day, which means that she gets to do show-and-tell in two different languages.   The only downside to having a large class is that I had to decorate fifty cupcakes.

On Sunday I discovered that Singapore appears to be out of the Wilton 1M cupcake decorating tip.  As a friend said, life is very hard on a stay-at-home dad.

I made do with a 2D tip and some silver dragées.  You know, those little silver balls.  Dragées are banned from sale in California but you can only tell that to my daughter’s teachers if you can say it in Mandarin.

You baked and decorated 50 cupcakes? I am so impressed!

The cupcakes were relatively easy. The more time-consuming project will be doing a Tinkerbell cake for her birthday party at home, this coming weekend.
