Our five day visit to the States was a quick trip down memory lane for my daughter. Since she lived near Washington DC from age one to three, many things were only vaguely familiar but there were moments where everything came into focus.
The Pentagon! Mommy’s Pentagon!!!
She wanted a banana ice cream cone from the tropical ice cream store and told me that “of course” she remembered Katherine, who used to work in the office next to me.
She gave me a lollipop once and you broke off some of it and you ate too much of it.
Still, most of it was a blur. She remembered her old bedroom. The National Zoo seemed familiar and so did our county pool, where it turned out we still had ten admissions waiting for us.
Is nothing sacred? Zebras behind yellow tape at the National Zoo. (I think the one on the right looks guilty, you might want to question him.) Click photo for more pictures.
We even squeezed in a trip to Sesame Place with one of her best friends from her former preschool at Bolling Air Force Base. I do not think we could have packed any more into one trip that was intended to be a check-up on our house in Maryland. Thankfully it still stands.
After all of the racing around we had a breather in California for another five days before heading back to Singapore.
My mom just turned 65, which is a remarkable accomplishment. Not just because she was diagnosed with Stage IV lung cancer about sixteen months ago, but because through chemotherapy, qigong, acupressure and some luck, metabolic activity in the two tumors has been completely stopped.
We spent a few days in Oakland with her before heading home after our last chance to visit the States before our baby boy is born in August.
Judging by the amount of kicking going on, our whirlwind trip may have been the calm before the storm.

This website is so polished!! You are a pro, Mitja. And every cute thing you can say about your daughter. Make up a superlative. That’s what I’m trying to say.
Well *I* certainly remember a visit to the National Zoo with you and your little jewel.
Just wonderful.
