The Ultimate Chinese New Year Cleaning

by Mitja on February 22, 2010

It was the first week of the Chinese New Year and if the rest of the year is more of the same, it is going to be a crazy year.  Elysia got back from Indonesia a few days ago, in time for a few new year celebrations and a prenatal doctor visit, and is now working in another country for several days. Oh, and we moved.

It is a tradition to do a very thorough cleaning of the house before Chinese New Year.  The cost of cleaning services skyrockets as people wipe down everything including the leaves on house plants.  We took it  a step further by moving out of our duplex house and into a single family house down the street.  Why clean when you can just leave the dirt behind?

Elysia qualified for the larger quarters based on her rank and our growing family and we thought we may as well get the nicest housing possible if it was available.  The new house has three bedrooms instead of two, a larger kitchen and a second full bathroom and more storage.  The  movers came on Wednesday, left on Friday, and now it will take another week to get everything unpacked.  I think we might almost have moving down to a science.

The housing here in Singapore is great.  There are apartments, duplexes and bungalows which originally housed the British and Australians until the British surrendered Singapore to the Japanese.  Which today means that the Australians have lower rent because they did not flee.  Or at least that is the rumor.

I think we will be staying put for at least another year or two but in the Navy you can never say for sure.
