Swimming Vegetables

by Mitja on February 7, 2010

It was in the news recently that the Wendy’s burger chain is leaving Japan.  They cannot compete against McDonald’s and MOS Burger, a Japanese fast food restaurant that sells a variety of fish-burgers which are probably similar to Krabby Patties.

At the mall today I saw this sign for a prawn burger — imagine shrimp on a fish burger instead of bacon — and was also reminded of a former colleague from India who was a vegetarian, except that he loved shrimp.  He called them swimming vegetables and slept well at night.

We skipped the prawn burger but Elysia had a craving for dried cuttlefish.  Dried shredded squid, a craving I will never have.  Did you know that it is the chewing gum of the Orientals?  Me neither, until now.

I was vegetarian for 2 years at UC Santa Cruz… Except every now and then I’d go out for burgers with another would-be veg. friend. We’d look guiltily at each other until I suggested we both think of it as “imitation tofu.”
