Beach Bums

With Elysia traveling for work and me tagging along, we come back from our trips through Southeast Asia with very different photos.  In Thailand, for example, she returned with pictures of a guided-missile destroyer leading a formation of Royal Thai Navy ships.   In contrast, I have a nice shot of a green tea donut in Malaysia.

I would like to note that the destroyer and donut each have a role to play in making the world a better place.

This week Citrus and I are headed to Thailand for several days of camping on the beach.  She is excited although we probably have different expectations.  When I told her we were going to have fun she said “We are going to Thailand!  We are going to go to playgrounds!”

Close enough.

A couple months ago Elysia went to Pattaya, generally known as the sex playground of Thailand.  A friend of ours said that it was very difficult to shield his daughter from what was going on, especially when the video vendors on the street have TVs showing their hardcore porn specials, so we are not going there for our daughter’s first trip to Thailand.

At first I thought some of the interior national parks looked interesting but I was not able to convince myself that we would not just bake in the sun while hiking up and down muddy trails.  Instead we are headed to a national park that allows camping on the beaches.  We are bringing a tent, a shovel and pail, and not much else.

Everything I have read says that we are going to a safe place.  Still, I will keep both my daughter and camera close by at all times.  No big bonfires, no swimming to Cambodia.

We will just stare at the sea by day and the stars at night and fall asleep dreaming of green tea donuts.

Either that or we will discover that monsoon season has not yet ended.
