One of the first things I learned about Singapore is that it is against the law to not flush a public toilet. This seemed like something I could support possibly in conjuction with the punishment of caning.
Thankfully our experience has been that restrooms are reasonably clean, especially compared to some of the other countries we have visited. There has been more than one occasion where anyone entering the men’s room would hear me repeating over and over to my daughter
Touch nothing! Don’t touch the wall! Don’t let your shorts touch the floor! Just hold your knees! Just hold your knees!
It gets trickier. If the standard toilet is not usable you are usually left with the floor toilets, which you squat over. It bothers me more than it bothers her.
So I guess it should come as little surprise that while searching through listings of volunteer opportunities, I came across this gem:
Title: Restroom Assessor
Organization: Restroom Association

- Requirements: – Pleasant personality – Good communication skills; bilingual (Ability to communicate with toilet owners and cleaners) – Attention to details – Passionate to see clean toilets in Singapore – Attend 3 trainings followed by auditing of 3 toilets
- Benefits: – Reimbursement on transportation allowance – Play a part in promoting local sanitation issues and efforts – Opportunity to interact with members of the public

For some reason I only found this posted locally. Maybe it should be submitted alongside the many Volunteer Vacation opportunities that idealist.org has listed for Southeast Asia.
