It had been a year and a half since Elysia moved to her new command at Norfolk, Virginia, seven months pregnant with Citrus while Mitja stayed in Silver Spring, Maryland. Then, in the first half of 2007, Elysia was deployed to the Middle East. While she was gone, a silent two-dimensional replica stood watch in her absence:

    Flat Mommy is sheer genius. Was it hard to get a cardboard cut-out like that made? I might have a tacky idea for it, if I can master the technology.

    Mitja–This is incredible. It should be a traveling exhibit. Well, I guess the internet trumps that outdated mode. Seriously, though, this is so moving–and says so much. Amazing.
